Proposed Open Source Yoga Artwork (Logos)
1. "Open Source" as a "Return to Source"
One design borrows from the
Power Button Logo found widely on electronic goods:
It has been flipped vertically from the original icon, to represent a "reversal of power" - or perhaps a "return to power" - that is,
away from
hierarchies and
power hungry organisational structures and towards a more
natural, grass roots movement ?
It also looks a bit like a tree (eco / natural):
Or, perhaps an entrance into an an "Open Arena" (game):
Or a bit like a lightbulb (original ideas):
... and maybe even something to do with male / female (gender / dualism / yin / yang):

It also incorporates the
Maiandra GD font which is associated with the arts and crafts movement of the early 1900's. The logo has, overall a very clean and simple look.
2. "An Expansive Spectrum"
This design started life as a representation of the
TING HEXAGRAM - which is found within the
IChing (Taoist). It means "giving nourishment to the people" in a similar way as a well would serve a community by being shared.
It was then combined with an original, stylised
Mandala using some of the basic spectrum of colours that some attribute to a representation of the
Chakras.
VIOLET/PURPLE governs the CROWN chakra, at the top of the head.
GREEN governs the HEART chakra.
YELLOW governs the SOLAR PLEXUS chakra, situated below the ribs.
RED governs the BASE chakra situated at the base of the spine.
The image was then manipulated, to allude to the
"mirrored" or "left-facing" Sanskrit SWASTIKA.
This is an auspicious symbol, and in particular the mark denotes peace and good luck (NOTE: the rotational direction was reversed to create a distance between the association of violence with Nazism !!)
The
Hindu Swastika is an auspicious symbol, and in particular the mark denotes peace and good luck (NOTE: the rotational direction can be reversed, and this was done for this logo to create a distance between the association of violence and Nazism !!)
- The coloring is interesting and the overal shape of the logo in relation to the words is great but it still seems too generic to me. -- ErwinDink
- It is difficult to add text to this design -- SimplyYoga - 27 Jun 2010
3. How about "Open Source Yoga" ?
This design is from the
Open Source Yoga Facebook group. It uses
muted colours, or (more accurately)
subtle tones - and the OS device appears to have been inspired by Zen (Buddhist) Calligraphy (the brushed circle symbolises enlightenment).
- I like the typeface used in this, as well as the calligraphy O, but the snake may be too obscure. It took me a minute to make the connection (kundalini, presumably) but it's not visually apparent to someone with minimal knowledge. -- ErwinDink
